This is the twelfth and final post in the 2021 Kindness series. Each month I will make a donation to a different nonprofit and write about the organization.

In honor of Indy’s birthday this month (he turned twelve) the November donation went to the organization that brought us together – California Labradors, Retrievers, and More.

When Michael and I were ready for a dog join our family, I started researching Labrador rescues in the Los Angeles area. After our experience volunteering with a rescue in Arizona, we knew we wanted to adopt an adult dog. We registered with two local Labrador rescues but found that they only had few dogs and large number of adopters. So, we expanded our search area and found California Labradors, Retrievers, and More in San Diego.

We completed the adoption application online and had a phone interview. After being approved we started browsing the website for our new family member. Over the next few weeks we found some possible matches and spoke with a few fosters, but alas – no ideal match. One day, the rescue contacted us about a new intake – Indy. After a long talk with his foster mom, we thought he might the one. Due to the distance, it was not easy to just pop over to meet Indy, so we planned a weekend road trip down to San Diego. Guess who came home with us…

About California Labradors, Retrievers, and More

California Labradors, Retrievers, and More is a volunteer-run nonprofit that rescues large dogs in southern California. They intake adoptable dogs from shelters, owners, and the streets and provide medical care and a foster home until they are matched to a new family. California Labradors, Retrievers, and More also works to educate people about responsible dog ownership and care.

I was impressed with the scope of their work and how well they listened to us and found the perfect match. Indy has been a loved member of our family for nearly eight years.

Founded 10 Years Ago (happy anniversary!)

12,000 Dogs Rescued (quite an accomplishment!)
